Discover the variety of experiences on the Männlichen

Enjoy a panoramic trip aboard the Grindelwald-Männlichen Gondola Cable Car. The journey takes you from Grindelwald Terminal up to the Männlichen in 19 minutes. The breathtaking mountain view of the Jungfrau region will be with you before, during and after the trip. Once at the top, a diverse range of activities and experiences await in the beautiful natural surroundings.

A trip to the Männlichen is an unforgettable experience—and so is the journey there. The gondola cable car covers 6.239 kilometres of the Grindelwald Terminal – Männlichen route. On its construction in 1978, at 6.2 km, the Grindelwald – Männlichen gondola cable car was the longest cable car of its kind in the world. In 1995, this record was broken by the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway in Australia. In 2019, the old cable car was removed and replaced by a new, faster model. The 10-seater cabins offer a fantastic view over the impressive mountain panorama.

The journey begins you from Interlaken Ost direct to the stop at Grindelwald Terminal, where the base station for the Männlichen cable car is located. In just 19 minutes, you reach the Männlichen. Once you reach the top, you will find a wide range of hiking trails. For children, there is a large alpine playground with an 8.5-metre-high wooden cow with a slide. In winter, there are numerous kilometres of slopes and a variety of tobogganing and winter hiking options available.

Your highlights at a glance

2-hour panoramic hike down to Wengen not recommended
An exciting ride on the gondola lift from Grindelwald Terminal to Männlichen without any waiting time. From there, we took a 2-hour panoramic hike down to Wengen, covering 1,000 meters in altitude. The hike is also classified as suitable for families, but we disagree. Narrow, uneven paths with extremely steep slopes. The view in Lauterbrunnental is not spectacular. We cannot recommend this hike. Accordingly, there were few hikers on this route. Hike instead from Männlichen down to Grindelwald Terminal, much nicer and easier route. The gondola ride to Männlichen (from Grindelwald or Wengen) is worthwhile.

    A must-do trip
This has got to be one of our most memorable trips in Switzerland. Take the gondola to Mannlichen. We had a Swiss Half Fare Card which softened the cost of all gondolas/funiculars/chairlifts. Had I known how useful that would be, I would have bought the full one - all hiking requires a bus, gondola, train etc to start a trail so if you plan to do a lot of hiking, it’s really worth it. Mannlichen - at the top you are rewarded by magnificent views. Truly awesome. We used poles to help us up the steep Royal Trail - again views at the top stunning. Walked back down to the Mannlichen park which is awesome. A huge cow to climb on, and cow bells inside to play. Very large restaurant here too - a great spot to sit with a drink and soak in the views. Next we walked to Kline Scheidegg - a gentle but two hour route to a railway station. Again awesome views on the way. Quieter than other routes. Just before you reach the station there is a restaurant with a sun- terrace - we stopped for a really nice lunch before heading to the station. Lots of staff here - you feel like you are at the end of the world, but everything runs smoothly with lots of people to ask. You can take a little mountain train to Jungfrau, take the train back down to Grindlewald or, as we did, take the train to Wengen. In Wengen, we took the Royal cablecar back up to Mannlichen - it’s the normal cablecar but, if you buy a Royal ticket, you can travel on the roof - just a bit of windy fun. Back in lovely Mannlichen to watch the cows with their cowbells on the mountainside before catching the last gondola down to Grindlewald. It was an awesome day.

    Mannlichen Royal Walk & Panoramaweg
Not cheap to get up here & do the Royal Walk & the Panoramaweg as a loop from Lauterbrunnen-Wengen-Kleine Scheidegg-Lauterbrunnen but the views are world class! Riding on the top of the Cable Car on the ‘Royal Ride’ was also a buzz & well worth the modest extra charge :) I’m deducting star because on the top of Mannlichen at the Crown at the top of the Royal Walk we encountered a horrible swarm of flies that was overwhelming.

    Killer park in the alps
What a killer place! We took the gondola form Grindelwald up and played at this park in our way down to Wengen. We came back up from Wengen and then walked the Lieolette trail. So fun. Kids loved it.

Really great views and a controversial skiing area for all levels
The views from the top were really amazing: We took many pictures and regardless of the weather, you can always get a good picture on Männlichen. I would recommend taking the capsules up and then directly go skiing. Personally, I am not a skiing expert (I started this year, also here in Grindelwald), but the posts were all in a great situation, treated and well cleaned. I really enjoyed this trip here with my family, as this was my first time on skis. I suggest going to Grindelwald Terminal first before taking the capsules upwards to the actual skiing area. Anyway, it was definitely a great experience for me and this is a clear recommendation for both ski amateurs and experts. Really loved it:))

    Beautiful, less crowded area
We took a cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen and then the royal ride cable car from Wengen to get here. Everything was included in our Berner Oberland pass. It was less crowded than other areas but very nice to experience. You can hike the royal walk, which is quite close by and an easy hike to a lovely view point. There is also a longer panorama walk you can do.

Outstanding, whilst times change the scenery doesn't.
Maennlichen is a magical place for us and we visit there nearly every year (weather permitting). The views are just magical and include the legendry North face of the Eiger. From Maennlichen we walk to Kleine Scheidegg (approx 3km) which is all downhill. I am amazed by the number of visitors who do realise or care that picking the Alpine flowers is illegal. From Kleine Scheidegg you can catch a train to either Grindelwald or Wengen, or you can walk down to either. Of course it is not cheap to get to Maennlichen but with forward planning and discount cards it is well worth it.

Männlichen: A Scenic Adventure You Won't Want to Miss!
Looking for an easy hike with jaw-dropping views and plenty of friendly cows to keep you company? Männlichen is your spot! As soon as you hop off the gondola from Wengen or Grindelwald, you'll be welcomed by wide-open spaces, alpine flowers in full bloom, and some seriously stunning mountain and valley views. The Royal Walk is an absolute must-do! It’s a breezy 30-minute hike (or closer to an hour if you’re stopping for photos, which trust me, you will!). The elevation gain is about 370 feet (112 meters), and while it might feel a bit steep at times, just take your time, stop to catch your breath, and soak in the scenery. Once you reach the top, the 360° views will blow you away—way better than what you see from the playground or other areas. Feeling up for more? You can also take the Panorama Trail to Kleine Scheidegg. This 2.8-mile (4.5 km) trek takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes and offers mountain views the entire way! You'll be walking toward the iconic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks, with additional breathtaking views of the green pastures rolling down to Grindelwald. The path is super easy to follow, with plenty of benches along the way to sit down, rest, and fully immerse yourself in the endless beauty around you. Tip: The cows are out enjoying their high alpine pastures on Männlichen from spring, once the grass turns green, all the way through mid to late September. So, if you’re hoping to meet these friendly grazers, plan your visit during this time! Check out my photos to see what I mean!

Amazing views and far less crowded
I found this place to be far less crowded than other places around Grindelwald. Take a train and then the cable car to the top. Once you get there are plenty of options. One can do the Royal Walk to the highest point. Takes between 20 and 30 minutes. The last part is quite steep. There are many very nice hikes and if you want you can actually walk down instead of taking the cable car back. Spend at least an hour on top. There is a very nice playground for children. There is a restaurant with good options. Keep in mind that everything in Switzerland closes by 5pm and they start winding down before that. So if you want to eat something be sure to check how long the restaurant will be open. The views from there are breathtaking and so do not rush Not many brochures highlight this place. My recommendation is to make this a “must see”

    Best hike in the area
If you only have time to do one hike then the Panorama trail from Mannlichen is an excellent choice. It’s a wide trail with great views and a gentle downhill slope. The top station of the cable car has a cute kids playground and a superb view by itself. The Royal Walk has a splendid 360 degree view and is only about a half mile from the cable car but it’s about a 20 degree uphill climb at altitude. Be aware of your ability. Hiking poles might be useful. You won’t need them for the Panorama trail. Access is via Lauterbrunnen via Wengen or via Grindlewald Terminal. The latter is faster. Don’t be put off by the hoards on the train to Grindlewald. They’re all going to the Jungfrau. The cable car to Mannlichen is right in the terminal. If you have more time then the trip via Lauterbrunnen and Wengen is attractive and offers many sightseeing opportunities.

    Brilliant introduction to Bernese Oberland
We loved the views and our kid loved the ride up in the massive gondola. Not as crowded or as many cars as on other routes, felt unhurried and nice. Views were among the best in the valley.

pro con advice- my experience of stunning Swiss Alps mountain summit
PROS • The most amazing and majestic stunning panoramic Swiss Alp mountain views • Large fields- plenty of space • Amazing and best Alpine heights children's playground • Fantastic restaurant building with amazing indoor and patio dining • Unbelievably easy access from both Wengen via (roof top) gondola and from Grindelwald (via continuous cable cars • Starting point for the amazing scenic hike to Kleine Scheidigg CONS • The cable cars should start earlier and certainly end later. “I VISITED THIS PLACE”… … twice on this trip- my fourth and fifth times- because this place rivals and even exceeds Lauterbrunnen as the most amazing beautiful place that I’ve ever discovered and visited. It seems that this is a place that I’ll visit every time that I am in the area- Mannlichen is so incredible and so outstanding- quite unbelievably fantastic. This time, I brought my 30 year old son with me. We ascended twice via the gondola from Wengen (we did not ride on the roof this time). The first time, we went because we knew that there was a snowstorm there and he wanted to experience that- 28 August 2023. The second time, we ascended in order to do the Romantic Walk- simply the most scenic hike that I've ever done (and I've done it now four times) We enjoyed the area immensely- we ate our packaged lunch on the patio (buying drinks, fruit and chocolate bars from the restaurant) and played on the children's activity structures there. WAS IT WORTH THE COST? Of course, and it's covered by the Berner Oberland Pass WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN? For sure ADVICE * Ascend via the Wengen gondola, and pay an extra CHF 5 to ride on its roof * Enjoy the views from the playground * Eat on the patio of the restaurant * Walk the breathtaking outstanding easy hike to Kleine Scheidigg, with the most constant continuous stunning views that a hike could ever offer * Do not do the Royal Walk to the summit- totally uphill, totally weather-exposed and the same adequate views can be seen from the Mannlichen children's playground FULL DISCLOSURE "I visited this place" with the plan to write a "helpful" review and to attach "helpful" photos here on tripadvisor, so if these did "help" you, please indicate that by tikking the "thumbs up" 👍 symbol. Thanks.

Worth the view at the top of the mountain!
While going down from Kleine Scheidegg, I thought to myself to have a little stopover at Wengen and climb the Mannlichen since it is included in the Jungfrau Travel pass anyways. The view at the top has views of Grindelwald on one side, and the Lauterbrunnen valley on the other side. It's amazing to see these villages from such a different point of view. It gives you a sense of scale of the Swiss Alps and how massive they are. I was also amazed at how there are cow pastures at the top of the cliffs. I wonder why they aren't worried about landslides and rockfalls.

    Absolutely amazing views.
This place is incredible. The views are absolutely breathtaking. We went up the gondola and hiked down halfway to catch the gondola mid way. The hike was incredible, and we passed tons of cows. Definitely reccomend this mountain, there is also a playground.
