Initially, the still yellow-marked hiking trail leads uphill on the left side of the Lütschine to Sichellauenen. You cross the Lütschine over a bridge and follow the edge path to the mountain inn Trachsellauenen. The route, now marked white-red-white, passes restored foundations of the former mine. In the 17th century, silver, lead, and iron were briefly mined in this region. At the mine junction, follow the signs to the alpine hut Schiirboden. Shortly after Schiirboden, a short detour to the Holdrifalls is worthwhile, which tumble down in two stages – the path to the waterfalls, whose catchment area is almost ten square kilometers, branches off right in the middle of an alpine pasture. Back at the junction at the alpine pasture, the path leads uphill to the alpine hut Läger. It continues along the Schmadribach with gentle ups and downs to the Tschingel-Litschina. After crossing this, turn left at the valley crossroads (point 1523). Uphill now, following the Lütschine to the Schaflägercheera junction. Here turn right and follow the beautiful high trail to the mountain hotel Obersteinberg. This invites you to stop after a climb through forest and alpine meadows – from the terrace you have a wonderful view of the three arms of the impressive Schmadribach waterfall. The return path runs northwards on the high trail to the mountain inn Tschingelhorn near Folla. Always downhill it then goes through the Schwendi forest, always following signs to Stechelberg, back to the starting point of the circular hike.
Background: The rear Lauterbrunnen Valley is a Pro Natura nature reserve and is characterized by its great plant diversity. Around the Holdrifalls grow numerous primroses as well as the poisonous white hellebore.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
- The ride from Stechelberg to Trachsellauenen with the hiking taxi, which should be booked in advance (033 855 12 64, garage-gertsch.ch), saves just over an hour of uphill hiking time. It is possible to split the hike over two days with an overnight stay in one of the two guesthouses Obersteinberg or Tschingelhorn. When staying overnight, a detour to Oberhoresee is worthwhile, starting from the Schaflägercheera junction (an additional 1 h 15 min).
Safety guidelines
- This route runs wholly or partly on marked trails of the mountain hiking trail category.
