Tell has been played in Matten bei Interlaken since 1912. What began as open-air theater is now a fixture in the Swiss theatrical summer season. More than 140 participants are on stage, many of them from the region – horses, cows, and goats play a starring role as well. When the cattle drive moves across the grounds of the theater, history is brought to life. Audience seating is in the weather-protected grandstand.
The natural stage at the Rugenwald gives the play an authentic touch. Long journeys, riding scenes, and real animals add dynamism to the play. The production stays close to the characters and asks what William Tell means today. You’re not just a spectator either: You’re right there, in the heart of the action, as the story of William Tell draws you in.
