In winter, the sun appears only briefly in the deeply incised Lauterbrunnen Valley. It shines for little more than an hour around the shortest day of the year. Overall, the sunshine duration here is likely to be significantly longer than in lowland areas: fog rarely occurs in the valley of the White Lütschine. The present winter hike can be planned so that the scarce sun rays are used optimally. If the hike is undertaken in December or January, it should not start before eleven and not after twelve o'clock.

From Lauterbrunnen station, follow the village street initially to the Hotel Schützen. In winter, the Staubbach is only a thin trickle that immediately dissipates into an almost invisible mist. Nevertheless, the constant flow leads to enchanting, extraordinarily large icicle formations on very cold nights. Under the influence of the sun, these crash down with impressive thunder during the day. Grosshorn, Breithorn and Mittaghorn form a majestic backdrop in the valley. The path leads over a low-traffic road always southward and straight on, past the junction “Bir Buechen,” to Stägmatta. Here the route again becomes a footpath, which runs through light riparian woods along the Lütschine past the houses of Lengwald and Matta to the destination Stechelberg.
