Gray below, blue above – with this weather forecast, there is only one option: hover above the fog layer and start hiking. For this, Niederhorn is a particularly suitable excursion mountain at Lake Thun.
The section Niederhorn – Gemmenalphorn was awarded a gold medal as the most beautiful hiking trail in Switzerland. The hike offers impressive views of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, many other peaks of the Bernese Alps, and Lake Thun. No hard surfaces.
This hike takes you from Beatenberg Station through an unlit tunnel (bring a headlamp) to Spycherberg. Slightly above, near Püfelberg, the very steep Bear Trail starts on the right side.
Popular and well known are the hiking trails over Gemschiflue or the middle station Vorsass between Niederhorn and Beatenberg. But who has ever heard of the Bireflue? The rocky cliffs lie inconspicuously in the wooded southeastern slope of the Niederhorn and are crossed by a very excitingly laid out hiking trail. The view from the summit of the Bire, which is reached via a dizzying staircase construction, is magnificent.
High above Lake Thun on the sunny terrace, around 1100 m above sea level, starts the technically demanding trail, which leads very action-packed down to Beatenbucht.
After a short warm-up section slightly downhill, the route continuously ascends. A total of over 600 meters of elevation gain and more than 11 kilometers are covered.
After a short warm-up stretch slightly downhill, it goes uphill up to the Niederhorn. A total of over 970 meters of elevation and over 19 kilometers are run.
A beautiful circular route with a magnificent panorama leads you over Burgfeld to Vorsass and above the village of Beatenberg back to the starting point.
